Installed WD 80MB external hard drive via USB 2.0 on a
DELL Pentium 4 CPU 1.8GHz, OS Windows XP home ver. Drive
installation was successful, XP assigned letter "D" to
this drive. A bit later I realized that my NEC DV-5800A
and NEC NR 7900A DVD/CD ROM drives had a problem and the
system did not reconize them. The first NEC DV-5800A CD
ROM had previously been assigned the letter "D".the
second "E". End result the drivers for these two CD ROMs
were corrupted.
I tried to correct with UPDATE drivers and ROLLBACK
drivers, system response, cannot do. I tried RESTORE but
the two CD ROM drives were still not seen by the system.
I have a disk from DELL with drivers on it but since I
cannot use the CD drive I can't reload the drivers.
I thought I might change the drive letters on these two CD
drives but so far have not been able to do so.
The new external WD hard drive continues to function fine.
I am at a loss as to what to try next. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi

Try this way

1. Use the safely remove icon to remove the ext. HDD, then disconnect the USB cable from the PC and reboot
2. After reboot, check the CD-rom and DVD rom to see whether they can work properly

A. If yes, go to disk management and change the CDrom and DVD rom driver letter
For example, change E to F and then D to E. After the change, check both the drives to ensure they work properly

B. If no, use the restore feature to roll back the OS to the date prior to the installation of the ext. HDD
Check to ensure both drivers are working properly and then change the drives letters as described in A

3. Run regedit to clear the old USB Mass Storage Device keys
HKEY_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Enum/USB/VID subkey
Double click the USB to open various VID subkey
Double click the VID subkeys and see the description in the right pan
When you find the subkeys for the ext. HDD (usually described as USB Mass Storage Device)
In the left pane, right click the VID subkeys and export and save the subkeys to a specific folder for just in case
After that, you can delete the whole VID subkeys for the USB Mass Storage Device

Note: If you cannot find this VID subkeys in the registry (since you have restored the OS), ignore this step

4. Reboot the PC and then reconnect the Ext HD
5. Go to control panel to ensure all drivers are apppeared and assigned with drive letter properly

Hope it helps

Pete
