I've installed a new DVD RW drive and my drives, including my old one, dont
show up in My Computer. When I put in a cd, it doesnt load up either. I have
put in the cables correctly.

My problem is simialr, however, my drives do show up, but XP is recognizing
them as CD-ROM drives. I have read all the knowledge based articles and have
followed them to a T(regarding the registry entries). I still can't get XP
to recognize them at recordable drives. My question is if I re-format my C
drive, will this correct the problem? I do now want to go through the hassle
of reloading windows XP and reinstalling all the software only to have the
drives still unrecognizable. The jumpers are set correctly as the drives do
show up in my Computer correctly (ie DVD-RW and CD-RW) I just want XP to let
me burn cd and DVDs.

Thanks

Jim

You can't burn to a DVD with just XP... you need third party burning
software such as Nero, Roxio, WinDVD Creator, PowerProducers etc.

Which DVD burning software do you have installed currently?

One other note - when I uninstall the drivers on both drives. I reboot to
have XP pick up the drivers. I look back in the registry under cd burning
The values for the volume settings sets them back to a '1'.

I am using Sonic to burn DVD. But that is not my main concern - I just
want to burn CD's, but the internal software for XP will not allow it - I
don't even have the option to burn anything. I am ready to reinstall XP. I
do not want to go through all that trouble, just to not have it work.

Thanks

I seriously doubt if XP is the source of your problem, unless you have done
something to cripple it (if you have, do a system restore). Much more likely
is that your burner software is flawed in some way (burner driver and or
burner software not installed or installed incorrectly).

My burner software is from Nero. It has never been a problem, and my OS is
XP.

I just can't figure it out. I have a Lite On CD-RW and it does not let me
Record to that either. I am wondering if Sonic might be the problem. I was
cosidering going to Nero anyway. I might give that a try and just dump Sonic
altogether - It came with my Sony DVD-RW. I am still deciding if I want to
reinstall XP. I would do a restore, but I tried to do a Repair of XP and
lost all of my restore points. It appears that XP is not recognizing my
CD-RW or DVD-RW drives. In MY computer, it correctly lists DVD-RW and CD-RW,
yet when I try and go and select -Record on this drive, I get no tab to allow
me to set that functionality. I may just end up doing a reinstall of XP and
see where that gets me.
