New DVD drive does not apear in My Computer

I installed a new DVD drive in my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer. I removed the
old CD drive completely. Windows detected the new drive and installed it
successfully. The drive appears correctly in device manager and inidicates
that it is working correctly.
The problem is that it doesn't show up in My Computer. I can't select it or
access it in any way. I have played with the drive jumpers, replaced the
ribbon cable, and uninstalled it completely. The motherboard sees it just
fine.
Any ideas? Thanks!
 
Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
click on Disk Management. Does it show up on the right hand side of the
screen? If so, assign it a drive letter.
 
The drive does NOT show up in disk management. It shows up in device manager
and indicates "this device is working properly". The motherboard bios
settings indicate the DVD drive also.

Open Device Manager. Locate the listing for the DVD drive
and delete it from Device Manager. Re-boot the computer.
It should report detecting new hardware. Let it complete
installing the new hardware. Check My Computer. If a drive
letter has not been assigned to the DVD drive, then follow
Cari's suggestion.
 
Actually, I've one-upped you. I have rebooted the computer after completely
removing ALL CD and DVD drives. There is no trace of the drive in device
manager. I reboot again with the DVD drive reinstalled. Windows reports I
have new hardware and installs the DVD drive. It appears in device manager,
but does not appear in My Computer or computer management.
To make matters worse, I have noticed that my old CD drive no longer
appears, either when installed. Personally I think this is a registry
problem. And I have a feeling I'm going to be reinstalling Windows - unless
you have a better suggestion. Thanks!
