ive posed this question 2 different times and have received 2 different
answers; both of which did not work. so ive decided that maybe i should
rephrase the question and be more descriptive:

to make it as simple as possible, consider the following:
windows 2000 AD domain with only 1 domain controller.
several windows 2000 and xp domain clients.

the domain clients are all logged off of the domain and while they are
logged off the harddrive of the domain controller is formatted and a clean
install of windows 2000 server is installed. active directory is set up
identically to the way it was before. user account names and passwords are
also duplicated exactly. what happens when one of the clients tries to log
onto the domain? well for one, they cant. im guessing SID problems among
other things, but if this is the only scenario, what is the solution? we
have resorted in the past to removing the clients from the domain,
temporarily joining a workgroup, deleting the local domain account user
profile, then rejoining the domain when the new DC is up and running.
problem with this of course is that all user settings are gone and
everything needs to be reconfigured on the client. obviously there has to be
a better way. can someone please help?

thank you in advance!

If you had to reinstall the server, no matter if you used the same name,
you'll still need to rejoin the clients.
That will create a new profile on the clients. After that logon as
Administrator and copy the 'old' profile over the new profile.
So you shouldn't delete the old useraccount.
