New doc opens 2nd Word

I open Word 2002 and a blank document awaits. But if I want to create a
document in a different template, it opens a 2nd document. Now I've got two
"Word" icons on my Taskbar.

When I finish my new document, I have to close two windows - the document I
created and the original blank normal doc that Word left open.

Is there some way to get Word to simply replace the 1st blank normal
document with the template I've chosen so I only have one Word window open?

The normal behavior *is* to replace the blank document (at least when you
*open* another document--not sure about creating). In fact, I always type a
space into Document1 at the beginning of my Word session in order to keep it
open all day as a scratchpad. But you could certainly close the blank
document after creating a new one. Alternatively, if you want Word to open
*without* a blank document (if you never create documents based on
Normal.dot), you can do this by adding the /n switch to the command line of
the shortcut used to start Word.
