new devices not intsalling

a few weeks ago i had updates installed on my computer via windows update,
when i rebooted it would not let me log in, it would get to the configuring
windows updates then say shutting down. after a few times of that i forced my
computer to shut down before it shut itself down and i was able to log in
after that. about that time i also updated my bios which since i have lost
the brightness key functionality and the automatic brightness change when
going to battery. since that time i have not been able to install ANY devices
that had not been used before that time. this would include USB flash drives,
sd memory cards, usb floppy drive and so forth. this has bothered me and i
have tried many things to fix this: down grading my bios, reflashing my bios,
uninstalling my chipset and then reinstaling it (which made my firewire
unable to install) and also rolling back to before i installed the updates,
none of which has worked.

the main problem that is coming up is that when i plug in the new device, it
pops up asking me to choose if i want to install the drivers, wait or never
ask again. if i tell it to install automaticly it fails and said windows
could not find the drivers please insert the disk that came with your
hardware (since most of these are simple devices they dont come with CDs with
drivers and i cant find them for download as windows should have built in
ones). sometimes it will understand what the device is but still be unable to
install saying the device is not configured correctly other times it remains
as an unknown device.

i would strongly like to avoid reinstalling my copy of vista buisness but i
need to know how to fix this problem. is anyone able to help or have some
resources that may beable to push me in the right direction?

i am running a Compal EL80 laptop with a C2D 2Ghz with 2Gigs of ram and a
Geforce 7600 GO.

again any help is greatly apprciated as i would like to fix this right away

iceykitsune,

Some folks have had good luck resolving USB device recognition issues like
you have by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with bad
data and cause issues like you have. The file is located at C:\Windows\inf.
There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it and select
delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself permission to
delete it, because of Windows built-in Security. Just right click the file,
select Properties and then click on the security tab. Let us know whether
this procedure does anything. Sometimes it does and sometimes not. Post
back on the results.

Sweet thanks that worked like a charm so far

I've had same problem and deleted infcache.1 file but sadly not solved the
problem - cant find any way to get my USB device support working again (for
new devices) so really appreciate any other suggestions anyone has?

Hi Freddy

Thanks for all your help & advice. I finally got Vista working correctly
again though it wasnt something that made me feel terribly confident about
it. I tried the fixes - including deleting the inf files but then ended up
with a machine that blue-screened everytime I tried to boot it. Finally
(after several attempts) I got it to boot in safe mode, in safe mode I then
put the USB device in and told windows to look in c:\windows\system32 for
drivers & amazingly it found them & loaded device correctly. Having done
this once the device was then recognised fine when I re-booted in standard
mode.

Think we're going to need Vista SP1 to avoid this kinda pain for everyone!
Thanks again for your help

Roger

Roger,

You managed to fix it! I was reluctant to tell you about removing all those
inf files, because it a rather unorthodox procedure, and I'm concerned that
some people will get wrapped around the axle while doing it. But you
managed. Great! That procedure works, but sometimes it's a scary exercise.
Thanks for posting. I've been checking looking for the results, holding my
breath.
