After joining a domain, my computer changes my user logon with a new name
using the new domain as part of the name.

Does anyone how to keep my current desktop settings and user name on the
machine after switching from a workgroup to a domain.

Your domain user names are assigned by your network
administrator. If you're the network administrator, make
your user name whatever you want it to be. If you're
not, suck it up and deal with it. =)

As for retaining your settings, that is simple. Log on
to the workstation as administrator, then copy the
contents of C:\Documents and Settings\<non domain user
name> to C:\Documents and Settings\<domain user name>.
You need to be logged in as administrator because if you
are logged in with either of your accounts, you will get
errors trying to copy files because you will have them in
use.
