Hi Guys and lasses, can you please help me, I bought a Dell computer three
months ago and it had all Mcafee security systems on it as a trial for three
months, time is up and I can't get the firewall deleted from my computer,
when I try I get the message "cannot delete Localized .DLL access is
denied! its so annoying every time I start up I get the screen asking me to
log on and buy the firewall , is there any way I can get rid of this
annoyance? any help would be appreciated TIA Beth.

You can't just delete McAfee, it must be uninstalled and if I remember
right, the simple add/remove process from the control panel doesn't get
it all. But maybe that has improved. Since it's a new computer, you
should have some sort of initial service warranty and tech support. I
suggest you start there. Dells site is here http://www.dell4me.com

For Mcafee go here http://www.mcafee.com/ click the <Home User> link and
then check out the Install and Uninstall link in the Technical Support
section.

Hi,
Something you might try is rebooting into safe mode (F8, I think,
while booting). This doesn't load all the startup programs, etc. Then, go
to control panel, add remove programs, & try to uninstall. The reason for
the error is that McAfee loads programs at boot up and they can't be
uninstalled while they are running.

==== I also had to remove the anti-virus that came with my computer,
what I did is is downloaded the anti-virus I wanted (in my case AVG
free) and saved the installer on my desktop (don't install it
yet)....... then restart the computer in "Safe" mode, by tapping the F8
key while it's starting,
when you get the start up window arrow to safe mode , then with it in
safe mode see if the icon for your anti-virus is by the clock, if it is
click on it and shut it down....if not OK ... now go to your control
panel and uninstall the anti-virus you want to get rid of..... now
restart your computer ... don't run anything yet, now install the new
anti-virus , restart the computer.... that should do it ...... now just
set it up for times to run updates and scans..
it's very important to use an anti-virus program , as well as a
firewall of some kind.... if you don't you will wish you had in short
order .....

Is that what I am looking forward to?
I have a new Dell that came with McAfee the whole thing, firewall,
antivirus, etc.
and it is annoying now so I figure for 15 months I put up with it and then
ditch it.
But if I read you right I will have problems, hummm time to get busy
searching it I guess.

If you want to dump McAfee, check out McAfee's web site and be sure to
uninstall as they recommend. Shouldn't be too much trouble. I kind of read
the op that they may have just tried to delete things instead of uninstall.
That does cause more trouble getting rid of it. You would have to reinstall
and then try the proper uninstall. Safe mode may be needed, I'm not sure.
It's been quite awhile since I wrangled with McAfee. No doubt it's better
than before. I've had Dell's recently and know others that have as well and
no problems with the box for me or them anyway.

Really - please validate your statement.

I called them and asked the salesperson what kind of hd's they used.
She didn't know. She attempted to connect me to technical assistance
and I was put on hold for 15 minutes and finally got disconnected.
Upon calling them back, I asked another salesperson the same question
and he said, quote, "Um...I think they come from Japan." I said I
didn't care /where/ they came from, I wanted to know who makes them.
He put me on hold and after another 10 minutes came back and told me
I needed to talk with technical assistance. I told him to forget it.

I then called Gateway and told the salesperson I would buy a computer
from her if she could answer one question: who makes the hard drives
you put in your computers? Without missing a beat she replied,
"Western Digital." They also matched Dell's specs and price and they
gave me a 70% discount on shipping.

I have not been sorry. I wouldn't deal with Dell if every other
company went out of business. Their products are decent, but the
company sucks. If the /salespeople/ don't even know a very basic
detail about what they're selling, why the hell would I buy anything
from them?

Thanks to all for help given you are all great!! mcaffee gone, zilch, no
more start up messages!! Thanks Again Beth

Dell now offers the option to install NO anti-virus software on a new
computer. I do that ... and then install AVG.

I really have a hard time understanding how McAfee and Norton can make a
business getting people to pay for AV when AVG and Avast and others are
available for FREE. And they work just fine.

Most people don't care where the disk drive came from or who made it.

Why train your salespeople with information that few people will want or
need?

Most stupid people maybe.

I don't know...maybe to actually sell computers?

Well I told them that I did not want *any* anti virus, firewall, etc.
I guess that did not make a difference to them since it was installed
anyway.

Yes, at DELL the sales people will agree to whatever you want to make
the sale. Then they ignore it. When they build the computer you get
whatever predefined disk-image goes with that configuration.

Over the years, I have had 1 Leading Edge XT, 1 Gateway 386, and 4
DELLs. I used to be a big DELL fan until about 2 years ago when I
noticed their tech/customer support falling way off.

I just ordered a new computer from a local shop that custom assembles
from standard components. You tell them what hard/soft-ware you want
and they quote a price. Their price was about the same as DELL's
delivered price, but all industry standard components; and the price
was only about 12% more than if I had bought all the stuff myself. The
box is bigger than DELL's, but that's not a problem.

I pick it up next week. I'll soon see how it works out.

Exactly whai I did 3 months ago, and I'm very happy with this _my_
assemblage. I remember when the seller said: "Firewall and antivirus... I'll
install Norton, ok?". And I: "No! don't wreck it! I use Kerio and Avast!".
It was funny to see him so amazed. He wouldn't have supposed that reaction
from a middle aged woman... ;-)
