New defs today-from 5685 to 5687. Only problem is the download keeps
freezing. I keep having to use TM to stop the process. Anyone else having
the problem? I'm sure I'm not the first to try the new updates this
afternoon so is it just so overloaded that it can't run?? Or is there some
other problem with the download? I have even uninstalled and reinstalled
MSAS with no improvement.

Running XP PRO, sp2 with all of today's new updates. Downloading through
MSAS update.

Hi Nancie,
I have downloaded the new definitions (5687) also and I did notice alot
of throttleing on and off of the download. Looking at the 2 computer icons
on the system tray I could see the lights flash on briefly and then off and
then back on and off. instead of a steady stream like a usual download. I
don't know if it is because there are millions of people downloading all at
once or what but I finally managed to download the new defs by just letting
it do its thing until the download completed.

I have just let it attempt to download for 13 minutes and it still is stuck
in the same place. The autoupdater states it is downloading definitions and
then nothing else is happening. MSAS has been running flawlessly until
today-could there be an issue with any of the 11 news MS updates I
downloaded earlier??

PS I know I top post, but I absolutely hate having to scroll down to find
my answers! I figure, if I want to see the whole thread, I'll open each
previous message, otherwise my memory or previous interest in the subject
will fill in the details ;-))

And it's now been 18 minutes since i started the download..........

Ok, now MSAS doesn't show any new defs available. The autoupdater states
every thing is up to date at def# 5685. Another computer here is doing the
same thing....new bug??

Old bug--and it is a display bug. If you go to files, check for updates,
you will observe that it doesn't update, but says you are current. If you
then go to help, about, you will see correct information--5687.

This is a display issue, both with the notification from Autoupdate, and
with the Help About reporting.

Bill,
I wish that was the case here. I have been lurking here for weeks and have
already tried all the tricks published thus far. After several attempts on
my machine and also on another computer here, the help file STILL shows 5685
1/28/05.

I have uninstalled twice, and had to run MSAS in safe mode to get the icon
to appear in the tray, as it didn't reappear after the first reinstall.

Ok, I just now attempted the update again-this time it updated correctly.
This was at least the 8th attempt.............the help file immediately
registered the update...

I guess all's well that ends well but it's been a frustrating few hours!

Oh---I failed to thank you and all the other professional out there who
spend so much of their time and effort to help. You ALL have my gratitude.
It just so happens that my other half is a DBA/techie/support pro who is
usually too busy to help me out!!!! Guess we know who really counts around
here............;-}

When you say you "attempted the update" I'm assuming you want to File, Check
for update?

And did you observe that you did not see the information lines indicating
that specific version definitions were being downloaded or installed?

And then, afterwards, the version was correct, in Help, about?

That's a bug--and I understand that they can be frustrating. This one is
known to Microsoft, and I have no doubt we won't see it in a future version.

What's that phrase--busman's holiday? I know I'm not always patient with my
spouses requests for tech support at around 10 o'clock at night, etc.

(and I do this both for a living, and as a volunteer here!)

FWIW;
Couldn't get my w2kPro m/c to update until I tried manually updating about three times.
1st two times it was fast, said it's up to date but Help/About still had old date & #
(5685).
Third time, it took "forever" (about 5+ minutes).
However, whereas the 1st two times it simply said it was updating, the 3rd time it said
*what* it was updating "5685->5687".

My XP m/c went fast and had the message about what it was updating.

One minor question - it went from 5685->5687 - was there a 5686 that I missed?

And you're doing a h*ll of a good job!
(you've got more patience than I could ever muster)

Bill,
I'll mix my answers with your questions..

Yes, every time.

And did you observe that you did not see the information lines indicating

The first 2-3 times it showed new defs were being installed then just hung
there for many minutes. Several times it simply showed everything was
current but the OLD ref # showed in the help file. The other times it
showed it was checking for new definitions and then it didn't go any
further. The updater "antenna" was animated but nothing else was happening
for as much as 18 minutes before I ended the process.
And then, afterwards, the version was correct, in Help, about?
The correct version ONLY showed up after the very last time--on both
computers, after the update functioned normally.

version.
I was mostly concerned that there was a conflict with the new MS updates
that I had done a couple hours earlier and that others would be having
issues also.

Again, thank you for your time and consideration.

Exact same problem here. Only I had to reinstall it
because I couldn't even start the program after I tried
and quit the download update. After reinstalling same
problem when trying to download new defs.FREEZE!

Thanks--updates, perhaps fortunately, are infrequent--perhaps weekly or so,
at the moment.

The only one that did anything was the one that showed the information
lines, showing the version numbers.

If, in fact, you knew the update to be available before you tried the first
two times, I don't have an explanation, except that for a worldwide
distribution system such as is involved here, there is some time lag, and
perhaps some locations that don't get the update as quickly as others.

The third one was real.

The last two updates have gone up by two, but they haven't released the
interim definitions to the world. It is possible that the interim sets are
being released to some other set of users--perhaps users of the original
Giant product, who will continue to be supported for a good long time, or
maybe internal beta testers--I'd bet that this product is on most Microsoft
desktops.

I did the update because I'd seen the announcement here, so I assumed it was available.
I think you're right ("..time lag").
What threw me was that it gave every indication that it had installed the update, now I
know to expect the message
(Updating x -> y) as "proof" that it's doing something.
(not to mention the Help/About ref-which I wasn't sure of given that it is a little
"wonky".

Thanks for the response.

It is a little "wonky." So far, I've yet to see it be wrong if you first do
a File, check for update, and see the two stars stating that you are
current. So if you look at it and you believe it is wrong, do an update,
(observing whether it appears to actually update anything!) and go back and
look again.

I had much the same problem - 15 minutes watching the antenna flashing after
forcing an update from the File menu, then closed it with Task Manager.
When I tried to open it from the system tray all I could get was the first
small display splash screen. I was going to Uninstall it, so looked at
Start, Programs to see if there was an uninstall there, and did an update
from there. Fairly quick, and then I was able to open it as normal from
the system tray.
