New database options

S

Sue

I currently use an Access database to house, maintain and report data, with
multiple users at various sites. It has recently become unstable, resulting
in loss of productivity and data. We have been encouraged to identify a new
platform. We love how user friendly Access is with importing, entering and
reporting, and cannot to lose these functionalities.

Any suggestions?

Hi Sue,
It a good idea to use SQL Server as backend and MS Access as frontend this
way you'll be able to use the functionalities you love in MS Access

Access can be used as a Front End for different Client/Server databases
like SQLServer, Oracle, etc. You could (possibly) keep all your current
queries forms and reports, and just migrate your data to a different
Back End. Which option would be best for you depends on various factors
such as what you may already have available, budget limitations, etc.
(neither of the above mentioned options are inexpensive).

Where I work we have several multi-user applications that are Access FE/
SQLServer BE. They work very well with (to date) zero problems (other
than a few user related problems). I have no real experience with Oracle,
so I can't comment on it other than to say I know it can be used as a BE
for Access.

There are also other "lite" options like SQLServer Express which are
inexpensive/free, but these may or may not meet your ultimate requirements.

Sue,

While I agree with everyones suggestion about migrating your back-end to SQL
Server I think it would help in defining "unstable". There are AMNY reasons
a database becomes unstable including tables not being normalized. It might
help to tell us what exactly you are experiencing so you don't move
"unstable" to a new platform.
