I have a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC with a 2ghz Xeon, 2.4GB of ram and room
for another CPU. This servers mainly runs MS SQL databases. Recently
the load on the server has increased so it seems necessary to upgrade
or add another CPU.
My Questions are these:
1. If I add another CPU, does it need to be the same as the other CPU?
Another Xeon 2ghz with the same Bus speed? Can I buy a Xeon 3ghz and
run it along side the 2ghz CPU?
2. Is their any reason to buy the CPU(s) through Dell since it's their
server? Should I just buy it through any other shop, or an online
store?
3. I heard it's best to get CPU(s) that come off the assembly line
together, as they would be more "alike" and run in better parallel, is
this true?
4. Would it be very difficult to add or replace a CPU? Would I need to
reconfigure anything on the SQL database, or would it just work?
I'm relatively new to the world of servers, my basic understanding is
that a server needs higher quality parts than a workstation, but the
rest of the computing principles are the same.
Any other advice anyone has, articles, etc... that would help me out, I
would greatly appreciated it.
Thank you
