Hi there.

I have a p4 computer.
using intel 815 gl motherboard with 1.8GHz cpu p4
can I replace cpu 3.2Ghz HT with old motherboard,
software loaded is windowsxp Prof. genuine retail purchase
cd.

Please advise me.
thanx in advance

Most like not as the new 3.2Ghz CPU uses a different socket configuration
that the old CPU.
You will need to get a new motherboard to use the faster CPU.

and then (probably) perform a repair install to get XP going again

www.intel.com

lists the 815 as a Socket 370 chipset (PIII), so I assume that you have
something else. Some 845 variant, perhaps?

It is unlikely that any mainboard old enough to come with a P4 1.8 GHz CPU
would support the 800 MHz FSB (front side bus) that a 3.2 GHz CPU would
have. It's possible that the 1.8 could have been a Socket 423 chip, so newer
Socket 478 ones wouldn't fit (besides being electrically incompatible).

There may be third-party adapters to fit a newer CPU to an old board, but I
doubt that they'd be inexpensive enough to be worthwhile.

Sorry that I can't be more encouraging.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.
