I just bought a new computer with XP Professional. I have done a backup of
my email accounts and address book (c:\windows\application data\identies
and also microsoft\address book) on my ME system. Where do I put these on
my new XP system to insure I have my old email and address book.

The *easiest* thing to do is to "import" them via OE. See this page for more
in-depth explanations:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/index.htm

....OR

You can use FAST: http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

Thank you I will read it. With ME I did my backup with Iomega zip drive and
then after a reformat just did a restore. But figured the folders in XP
would be different. So will be doing my zip backup in the morning and then
start my new computer and restore all of my data I can find a place for on
the new computer.

If you used the Backup utility that ships with Windows Me you will find that
XP Pro's version of Backup is not compatible and can not open .QIC files.
However the 30 day trail of Backup MyPC can help as it installs to XP and is
able to open and restore .QIC files www.stompinc.com

No.. I always did my own customized backup in ME. I know which folder I
wanted to backup and set my iomega backup to backup just the folders I
wanted. I guess I will just need to start up the new computer and see if
email is in C:\windows\applications\identities. If it is then I can just
copy them there like I did on ME.

No do not "just copy" the files. If yopu do that, OE won't see them. Put
them into a new folder and in OE do a "File-Import".

You would be much better off to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
( FASTW ) which will allow you to not only import the files, but will also
import all of your email account settings, folders and Identities. Go to
this website and read Gary Woodruffs excellent article on how to use this
great utility.

That should work. Sounds like a great feature of XP. I have an external hard
drive that I plan to backup my ME stuff on...will also backup it on my zip
drive twice.(old DOS person....does 3 backups of everything)

I will install my zip and external hard drive right away and do the backups
after I have installed the programs.
