I am a win 98 user who is getting a XPPro system from Dell delivered in a
few days. Not yet being familiar with XP is there suggestions of items to
activate or modify prior to my first going online or moving data via
crossover cable. How about need to backup OS?
Dell states it has SP1 but not SP2 installed.
If it matters it will be put directly on a DSL line with no hardware
firewall.

Before plugging in youre internet connection, open control-panel,internet
connection,R.click on the icon,properties,advanced,then select,turn on
firewall,close-out.

Before you connect that new machine to the net....
Install anti virus program
install a firewall
there are nasty little bugs out there that search out XP as soon as its
connected to the net and infest your new toy.
which is what SP2 is partially able to prevent

Securing Windows XP

- Four articles from Microsoft to get you started. Forget about the built-in
firewall though, get yourself a firewall that will give you inbound &
outbound protection. XP's firewall will do initially.

Turn off Universal Plug & Play

Microsoft's DCOM security patch leaves DCOM running, open, and waiting for
the next malicious exploit.
Our 29 kbyte "DCOMbobulator" allows any Windows user to quickly check their
system's DCOM vulnerability, then simply shut down the unnecessary DCOM
security risk. This may be addressed in SP2.

Thank you all that replied. There was some good useful information.
I have eyeballed most of it and the only problem I see is that if I do:
100% of it would be doubtful that machine would ever run considering pages
of registry changes suggested.
50% of it would be doable over a thirty day time period, maybe.
25% I will incorporate, AGAIN thank you all.
