anyone know of a site that describes trasferring to new computer? What needs
to be done in step by step procedure. I bought a new computer and don't the
basics on how to change over.

transfer what????
programs.........cant they need to be reinstalled unless you clone the old
HD to the NEW HD and then do a repair install of XP when you start your new
system.Assuming that you want to transfer everything including your
Operating System. The Repair Install would correct the drivers from old to
new. This of course assumes you have a Retail version of XP installed not a
version that you bought with the system which most likely will be tied to
the old computer and cannot be transferred. After the repair install you
would still need to run the motherboard drivers CD to install mobo specific
drivers.
Operating System.......did it come with the old system?? is it a Retail
version that you installed??
chances are if it came with the old computer it cannot be transferred.Retail
version see above.

There are various "cloning" software out there........I like Acronis True
Image. It works as advertised,is fairly simple to use and can be used for
backups after all is done and moved.
Moving an OS from one computer to another can be fairly easy or very hard
depending upon what equipment you are moving from and to.If you have a
fairly old system and are moving to a very new uptodate system it most
likely is easier to just start from scratch and reinstall the OS and all of
your programs and then install the old HD in the new machine and copy your
saved material over.

Exactly what is it that you want to transfer?

I'm buying a new computer to replace my damaged older one. I assume I am
going to get the Window's Vista OS. Will I have to notify my cable company or
will my new computer just log on my old information? How do I transfer some
things such as Norton Internet Security to the new system and things of that
nature?
Thanks

You will have to install your programs again.. some may not work under
Vista, so check with the software manufacturer websites first..

RE. Norton Internet Security.. use the CD as a coaster or bird scarer in the
yard.. if you think that either solution is wasteful, repackage it and give
it to somebody you do NOT like..

No, the cable company doesn't care what operating system you run. (But see
below).

or will my new computer just log on my old information?

Your new computer won't know your old information. It's not a matter of
transferring anything, but you'll have to set up the new software to work
properly with your ISP. If you don't know how to do this, the easiest thing
to do is probably to call your ISP and ask them for help.

How
do I transfer some things such as Norton Internet Security to the new
system and things of that nature?

Several points here:

1. You can *not* transfer programs to the new computer at all. What you have
to do in install the programs on the new computer from the original
installation media.

2. In my opinion, Norton Internet Security is the absolute worst security
package on the market, and you'd be well advised to scrap it and use
something better. I'm not even sure whether it works on Vista at all.

3. If, by "things of that nature," you mean something other than what I
addressed above, please clarify what you mean.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Ah!! new info
did not think they were selling new systems with Pre-installed Vista at this
point in time.
You will definitly need to reinstall all of your prgrams but can still
transfer all of your work either by copying to a DVD and then to the new HD
or by installing the old HD temp. and copying the info over.
A lot of the older security suites will not work on Vista...........with the
newer firewall in Vista and the new anti malware included you will still
need an Anti virus........one that is Vista capable.A google search will
turn up a few...I have used both Avast and AVG on a Beta copy of Vista and
they work...and they are free.
