I just got a Dell. It has 1gb sdram, 2.8cpu and 80gig hard
drive. I'm on DSL and this computer runs 3 times slower
than my 5 year old E-Machine on dial-up. Any one have any
ideas? I'll look for a reply in the morning.

If you mean that your internet connection is slower...
are your using the USB connection?
If so...by all means use Ethernet.

If you mean that the whole machine is slower...
you should call Dell before your warrantly runs out!

If you are using an ethernet connection to the DSL modem check the
connection's media type. I had a machine that communicated 10 ten times
faster after changing the media type.

Yes my internet connection is slower. I'll Check to see if
I'm useing the ethernet which I believe I am. I Don't know
What a media connection is as posted below by "Michael"?
If you know what that is can you reply? I'll ask Michal as
well.
Thank you Glen

What's a "communiction media type"? Thank you for your
intrest in my problem My Wife's & her business will be
very happy if we can get this new computer runing as fast
as I think it can on the internet.

You need to go to Network Connections, right click on the connection,
click on properties, click on configure, then click on the Advanced tab.
One of the options in there should be Network Media. Try the
different Auto Negotiation values first. You might also see if the tech
support for your connection can give you the proper value for this and
any other settings.
