Hello!
I got an EeePC about 2 weeks ago. It's running WinXP Home SP2 and has a 4GB
SSD (it's a subnotebook). I upgraded the RAM from 512 to 2GB. Everything was
perfect until Thursday when I inadvertently downloaded a theme file from
Appleblossomart.com (AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE) that had the Win32/Gaelicum.A
virus. I got rid of it using the vcleaner tool from AVG. After I finished I
ran several AVG scans, all came back clear. I ran the Windows Malicious
Software Removal Tool and it found nothing. All was good until Saturday when
I clicked shutdown and a window popped up Windows Live Mail couldn't be
closed automatically and did I want to manually shut it down (I had already
exited the program before clicking shut down). I said yes and it closed and
the system shut down normally. I rebooted to see if everything was fine and
when I went to shut down this time I got:
"The system is shutting down. Shutdown is initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM
C:\windows\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code
1073741819
System will close and reboot in 60 seconds"
When it rebooted all was fine. In fact I was error free all day Sunday but
Monday evening got that error again. When it reboots all is fine. I tried
installing AdAware but when I try to run it I get:
"Exception EAccess Violation in module Ad-Aware 2007.exe at 001DD084. Access
violation at address 005DD084 in module 'Ad-Aware2007.exe. Read of address
00000414."
I checked out LavaSoft's support forum but it was absolutely useless-they
seem to just answer everything with a suggestion to get the paid version.
Someone on another board suggested ComboFix. Ran it and it found no
infections.
The services.exe error is random but always seems to appear a few minutes
after I exit Windows Live Mail. Anyone have any ideas? I am wondering if I
should just use the Recovery CD and start fresh. The only program I
installed around the time the services.exe error began was Windowblinds,
which I removed because it kept triggering a "Data Execution" error. I
uninstalled it and the error went away. I have my pagefile turned off to
save space and also have system restore disabled for now-if I do have some
remnants of that damn virus left on my system I don't want to create any
infected restore points. Since all my scans have come back clean I doubt
it's a malware issue. I appreciate any help I can get-thank you!!
