I just bought a new ACER xp pro that works terrific except I get no
sound, not a peep, nada. I'm told by ACER that I probably need a new
mother board and it is on it's way. Thank God for warranties!
My questions: Not being cp savy, I don't know what a mother board's
funtion is. Can someone give a brief over all to a some what cp
illiterate? Also, will replacing the mother board cause me to lose any
info (programs, files, etc.) I already have on my cp?

The motherboard is the home of the processor chip and all of the
support chips. It has tiny copper wires to join them together.
It also has all manner of connectors and slots, to allow adding
and removing components (video card, PCI cards, more memory
slots, connectors on the back of the computer for USB,
Ethernet, dialup modem, and so on).

If the exact same model of motherboard is being used, the
motherboard swap is virtually invisible. No program loss or changes
to the hard drive will happen.

If enough pieces of hardware in a computer are changed, you may
have to phone Microsoft to re-activate, but based on the
following, if the motherboard has a built-in network adapter,
you won't even need to phone Microsoft since the threshold of
hardware changes hasn't been crossed.

With sound output on computers, anything is possible. Sometimes
it is a driver issue. Sometimes they use bad quality connectors.
You may in fact be getting a new motherboard, when one is not
needed, but you'll know for sure after the new motherboard is
installed. If the sound still doesn't work, concentrate on
the driver side of things.
