New Computer/New problems

I went from Windows 98/Word ? to Windows 2000 NT and Word 2003 and have the following initial questions; these are the ones I can't figure out on my own because of the way Word now operates. I thought it would be easy, but the edition functions, etc. are different. So ... here it goes ~~

1) Can I use LapLink (or similar program such as IntelliMover) to transfer over files from the old computer to the new computer so I don't have to recreate items. This would include not only master letters and so forth, but I'd like to copy over my dictionary file to replace the one that comes standard (this is where I found I couldn't just do a copy/paste as in the new computer you choose "modify" and change one entry at a time and in the old computer you chose edit and it brought the entire list up).

2) Along with #1 above, am I going to run into conflicts via filing system differences between the Windows versions or Word versions?

3) Usint Alt+A to highlight a document and then pressing BACKSPACE does not delete my text any longer. Wondering why and/or if this can be changed. (never mind, got the answer to this one)

4) I used a macro that was written to back up my AutoCorrect entries (and there are a TON of them). Will that macro now run on the new system so I can pull my table right into the new computer and keep on flying? (Please say yes to this!!) And, if so, how??? Simply use the Macro and "restore," which is one of the options.

5) It's late and that's all I can think of at the present time, but are there obvious differences I'm gonig to run into from any of you out there that have had occasion to do a similar upgrade? Any information, good or bad, would be appreciated so I'm not banging my head against the wall. I'd much prefer to take advantage of all the combined knowledge here.

Thanks a bunch, and if possible, when you respond here can you also respond to me directly at (e-mail address removed) so I can get the reply as soon as possible.

Much appreciation in advance

It may be important to know what version the older Word was. I'll
guess it might have been Word 97. If it was older than that, you may
have more problems bringing things forward.

You can *probably* transfer files that way. Depending on how
intelligent the mover is, you may have to shuffle some files to
different folders than they occupied in the old setup.

In particular, you can use the old Custom.dic file, but it will have
to go in a different place in the new setup. In Word 97 and earlier
versions, the default location of the custom dictionary was C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office. In Word 2000 and later (on Windows 2000
and later operating systems), the new default location is C:\Documents
and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm for how to
locate the folder, and other similar issues.
2) Along with #1 above, am I going to run into conflicts via filing system differences between the Windows versions or Word versions?
If you have custom templates, they may also need to be placed
differently. Look at the Tools > Options > File Locations dialog to
see where the User Templates and Workgroup Templates folders are (or
change them to point where your templates are).
3) Usint Alt+A to highlight a document and then pressing BACKSPACE does not delete my text any longer. Wondering why and/or if this can be changed. (never mind, got the answer to this one)
In Tools > Options > Edit, check the box for "Typing replaces
selection". (Small correction -- Select All is Ctrl+A, not Alt+A.)

That depends on what the macro does and in what version of Word it was
written. It's likely that it will work, especially if the old version
was Word 97, but it's *possible* that it won't. If the old
installation is still available, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm for a
template that does this job.

Thanks for everything you do. It's wonderful knowing
people with your knowledge and expertise are out there
helping people like me. I really appreciate the
information. You all are WONDERFUL!!!
