Hi, I just recieved my new PC and now I can't figure out how to transfer all
my files from my older PC. My new pc is a

Dell XPS 400 Pentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz,
800FSB) , it has a DVD recorder writer. Trouble is my old pc has a cd rom
recorder writer. I thought I would be able to place the old harddrive into
my new machine. Please help.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply. Can I burn them to a CD-R and then install
the information on the new PC with a
DVD recorder?

How much work do you want to do? The easiest way to transfer files
is to burn them to a CD-R on the old machine and then copy the files
to the new machine. At the same time, a backup is made. Why bother
about opening the new computer and trying to hook up the old drive?

Your dvd drive is able to read cd's

Does your old computer have CD burning software on it, like Nero.
If it does then its as easy as GHalleck has explained.
Does your old computer have a CD-R or CD-RW or is it just a CD player drive.
You say 'old pc has a cd rom recorder writer', as if this was a problem.
My old back-up PC has only a CD Rom - I have to use an external drive to
record anything.
Hope you don't mind my asking for confirmation.

Thanks for your help also. I was unaware that the dvd drive could read a cd,
This ismy first DVD player.
Thanks again, I feel so much better.Thought I would have to buy something
else for the transfer.

Have you tried to run the "Files and settings transfer wizard"
on your new PC?
( in Accessories > System tools )

You could place the old HD into the new machine.........connect the power
.....connect the IDE cable......change a jumper..slave or master depending
upon where you hook it up to.............less time than burning a CD-RW
transfer what you want
take the old drive out or leave it in as a 2nd drive....format it before use
as 2nd drive
You will only be able to transfer files you created not programs.

Recently bought my wife a new E510 from Dell. It has SATA
hard drives and IDE is for the two optical drives. I just
opened the case [very neat inside] and disconnected the
cable from the optical drives. That was because I needed
slack to have room to connect the old hard drive. The
computer booted normally I transferred the old drive data to
a partition on the new computer's 160 GB drive [the old
drive was only 20 GB, I just copied the whole drive].

Then I put it all back as it was when the computer was
delivered and took my time transferring the data I needed
from partition G: to where I wanted it on the new drive.
Very quick.

The modern DVD burner can burn single and dual layer DVDs of
several type and read and write all forms of CDs.

But see my other post, it is easy to just connect the old
hard drive to an open connector from the IDE optical drives.

Easiest method is to use a USB crossover cable, available at CompUSA.
