I am running Windows XP home edition on my computer. I am
trying to compress a PowerPoint file so I can email it in
to my professor. But when I go through the steps and
click on "New Compressed (zipped) Folder" I receive the
following error message:

Unable to create the file 'New Compressed (zipped)
Folder.zip' Access is denied.

I really need help quickly as I need to turn assignment
in by Monday pm.

Thanks,
Emma

I am trying to compress a file saved as a PowerPoint
presentation file (2866KB). I right click on the file,
then click on "compressed (zipped) folder. I receive an
error message "cannot create output file." At the same
time I have a box showing a file being compressed, but if
you click OK in error box, everything stops. Could the
file still be compressing even with the error message?

I guess I'm not sure what steps you're going through. Could you please
elaborate?

I was able to create a compressed file folder on my C
drive. I had to copy my original file from a CD to the C
drive. I then moved it into the compressed (zipped)
folder. But the new compressed file size is 2752KB
(original size 2868KB). I am not sure that this has
compressed enough for me to send it as an attachment by e-
mail. I have never compressed a file before, but I
thought that it would be smaller in size.

ELipp,

PowerPoint does a very good job of compressing the file so you simply won't
see much reduction in size using the zip format.

So the problem was that you were trying to create a (new) compressed folder
on the CD.
That makes sense, as CDs aren't writeable, generally.

As to the file size, PPT files are highly compressed to begin with, so
further compression doesn't usually result in much file size shrinkage.

If you need to keep the file size down, it's best follow the suggestions
here:

Why are my PowerPoint files so big? What can I do about it?

In addition to the previous suggestions, you may want to try using a
PowerPoint compression utility, such as Impact POINTLess, which
eliminates the zip/unzip process and renders the compressed file in
the PPT format. It would be especially effective if your presentation
includes embedded objects and lots of images -- especially
uncompressed images. The trial version is at
