New build - slow Winamp

I have a newish AMD 64 bit 3000+ (Socket 754) PC and everything so far
seems very fast compared to my old AMD Duran 1.3Mhz PC.

One piece of software which still takes a lot of time to start is Winamp 5.
It take about 4-6 seconds just to start loading Winamp (about the same as
my old 1.3Mhz) and then to start playing a track. Is this expected? I
assumed loading Winamp would have been more or less instant with the new
system.

Is Winamp known to suffer from this problem or is that my PCs not running
as fast as it should? Is there an easy way to test to see if PC is running
as well as expected?

My background tasks are minimised.

Thanks

depends on the skin you use

I currently have an AMD2600+ with 512RAM (DDR) and it loads almost instantly
when using the classic skin, as for starting songs it is instant

it probably also depends on the speed and size of ram you have and size of
the playlist you use in winamp (if it has over 150 songs it will take a
while to load up properly)

Thanks for the reply Christo. I've changed the skin to classic and closed
Media Library. It has helped a fair bit with the load time. Although it
still feels sluggish. I can't imagine it could be memory related. I have
1GB (3200).

ah, maybe its hdd then, try defrag, are you using SATA drives or ATA100/133?
although that probably wouldn't merit a noteable difference in speed.

It has me baffled with an AMD64 processor and 1 gb memory it should be
loading pretty quickly, yu aren't using the visualizer are you? that could
be pretty memory intensive on start up even with 1 gb ram

Its an ATA drive. I'm not using any kind of visulization, but since using
the classic skin like you said, it is much faster to load, about 1-2
seconds. I'll try a defrag and see. Otherwise, i guess its not too bad now.

Thanks agin chris, its much appreciated.

Are you using DFX or some other third-party add-on to Winamp ? DFX
greatly increases loading time for Winamp, to about the length you
mentioned.

Nope, no plug-ins at all. Infact its a recent format/installation of
windows so everything's pretty bare at the moment.

Is there any kind of benchmarking software people here would recommend?
(besides 3dMark)

Thanks

Check CPU utilization in Task Manger.
Benchmark the HDD with something like HDTach, note
throughput and CPU utilization.

Check memory and CPU performance with Sisoft Sandra.
It's not a comprehensive or necessarily accurate test but
plenty good enough to see if there's a problem.
