Thank you!

Here's additional information about this new build:

Since releasing Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on January 6, 2005, we have
received feedback from customers and have made enhancements to the software
based on this feedback. We have enhanced some of the real-time protection
agents, added new threat categories, and improved stability and performance.
If you are using a previous version you can simply upgrade to the refreshed
version. The version number of the refreshed version is 1.0.509. To check
the version number, click About Microsoft AntiSpyware. on the Help menu.

Participants in the worldwide SpyNetT community play a key role in
determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft
researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which are
automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.

The user must be an administrator to install this application.

Note: This download has been updated to include signature version 5687,
which is the most current as of February 10, 2005. Customers who have
installed Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware prior to this date do not need to
re-download. They will receive signature updates as part of their next
automatic or manual signature update.
------------------------------------------------------------
Additionally: To install this build,. you will need to download and install
from scratch. I believe the install will uninstall the previous version,
and will require a reboot. In theory, you might avoid the reboot by
uninstalling first, but in practice that didn't work for me on the single
machine I've tested so far.

This build does have performance improvements as noted above, so please
re-test if you had performance issues. It does NOT have significant UI
improvements. The issue with the scan being interrupted when you click on
other choices has been fixed.

Mine says Version 1.0.501
Definition Version: 5689

LiveUpdate wont upgrade the programme build then? So I have to redownload?

Thanks

Yes you do. For this update, you need to re-download. The installation
routine will do an upgrade, however.

is it best to uninstall the older version ,or just leave it and install
newer version

I share that same distaste. In fact, I had one machine I never could get
validated.

The validation process is a one-time (or at least quite infrequent--the
actual storage mechanism for the "approved" bit is not public.) You may
need to re-download the ActiveX control at some future points, but you won't
have to crawl under the desk again.

My reading of the foreshadowing texts is that this will be a requirement for
the download once the product is final.

There are probably more "not changed" than fixed areas. They have fixed the
issue with clicking in the UI halting a scan without notice.
Aside from that, the release notes are not updated so far, and what I know
is in the second paragraph from the download page, which I think I quoted in
this thread.

The major problem with this validation are files floating
around within p2p networks
You find tons of "MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe" as
torrents or p2p files.

There is no need för ActiveX, it is programmed so Firefox
can do it ;) Thanks MS !
I dont know if Firefox remembers it. You download a small
file legitcheck.hta
and then validation can be done.

OK

OK, "rock solid" for me, uninstalled Spywareblaster and
Spywareguard, wait and see
if realtime protection works. Time for IE again.........

That's great--I hadn't ever tried with a non IE browser--didn't know it was
possible.

I've no doubt that Microsoft is quite aware of the existence of the download
outside of the legitimate download channels.

I just downloaded the new one without uninstalling the 501 version and it
went without problem. The 509 works great.

Bill,

download outside of the legitimate download channels.
I don't even think I would try to run one that fell off a P2P service. :)

Seriously folks, let's go to the right place for a free, safe download.

If a user cant validate for any reason and wants a MS file,
what to do ?

He/she download for example
"MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe" with
"extra hidden magic components" from p2p.

At this point, validation is optional.
I'm not going to speculate on longer term hypothetical questions--ask again
when the time arrives.
