Hi!

You guys are a smart bunch, I need to get a new desktop for my
father's budding business, and so far all the Big Shots sell their
boxes with Vista, which I do not want. Dell, HP, help me out here. Any
ideas?

If you are looking for Windows XP as an Operating System,
you need to look at "Busines class" PCs rather than "Consumer class" PCs.

visit Gateway at:
http://www.gateway.com/
Choose "Small Business"
Gateway Business PCs are configured with Windows XP (SP2)

visit Dell at:
http://www.Dell.com/
Choose "Small Business"
Dell Business PCs offer the following Operating System options:
Genuine Windows VistaT
Genuine Windows® XP

Visit HP at:
http://www.hp.com/
Choose "Small & Medium Business"
HP Business PCs offer the following Operating Systems Options:
Genuine Windows Vista Business 32-bit
Genuine Windows XP Professional 32-bit
Genuine Windows XP Professional x64

1) Buy a new computer.
2) Buy some blank media. Boot the new computer.
Follow the procedure for burning a set of recovery CDs.
This is your backup copy of Vista.
3) Go to a local computer store. Buy a copy of WinXP.
Install it in place of Vista. Job done.
4) In three years time, you'll want to sell the computer.
Reinstall Vista, using the set of recovery CDs.
Now, sell the computer, complete with the recovery CDs.

Instead of buying from Del or HP

go to some place such as Newegg...

they still have XP computers in stock...

or , if so inclined you could get a barebones kit
and install XP yourself.

The problem I run into with the big guys, is that they all want to
sell me a Celeron processor. No thanks, I like a desktop processor in
a desktop. Once you put a Pentium or a 64X2 in it, the price doubles.
Seems like bait and switch, and they don't give you any other options.
(on line at least)

This is simply not true. I just bought 6 Dell OptiPlexes for a client.
None of them have Celeron processors and they all have XP Pro. You need
to spend some time looking again and custom configuring your target system.

Dang it! Yer right. My bad. I guess I lost my patience.

Dear M32:

If you call Dell/Gateway/or any other custom computer builder and have a
system built to your specifications, you will be able to choose your OS.
However, if you buy one off the shelf, with the Vista pre-loaded at the
factory, you won't. You may even get a small refund for choosing the "old" OS
rather than the new one. Give it a try. I think you will be pleasantly
surprised.
