New blue screen error on Vista Home Premium after update

One of my users at work brought me his system from home to work on. He
said they had installed some Microsoft Updates and rebooted when
prompted and now they are getting a blue screen error on boot. I know
I can fix it by reinstalling Windows, but I'd rather not.

The error occurred on Feb 9/10, 2010 after automatic updates installed
something and prompted a reboot. The error we are getting now is
0x00000007E and there is mention of "scfltr.sys" but it all goes by
too fast for me to read.

Is this related to the Windows XP problem that came out around the
same time, and if so, how the heck do you fix it on vista?

Anyone got any ideas????

My idea is that the reboot didn't finish.
A reinstall would be an overkill. There is a much easier way to tackle this:
let 'Vista' fix itself, either within the system or with the CD. Maybe
someone a bit more affluent could take over from here, it would be much
appreciated.

Automated repair didn't work. It tries that every other boot and then
says it can't fix it. I even tried a restore to a previous save and it
didn't help. :-(

I need to get up to speed on Vista and Windows 7 as I'm sure we'll be
getting a few Win 7 machines eventually. :-)

I saw mention of this on a web site. If possible, you boot the recovery
DVD to the repair prompt, then use that to uninstall the fixes. I would
guess the fix is the same as XP's.

1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console
(see this link on how to use recovery console)

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst

3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt

4. Type this command: systemroot

5. When complete, type this command: exit
