New ATI Drivers

Call me paranoid, but I've gotten to where I'm nervous about updating
anything... have you tried this new driver yet? any luck?
I tried the link, and it says I'm unauthorized to download it...

So far so good on the Vista 64 drivers. I'm getting better numbers of Doom3
(still about 15 shy of XP) The FEAR numbers are still neck and neck with XP
and the 3dMark06 numbers are still about 10 shy of XP.

I've done several reboots and no BSODs. Next stop Vista32 drivers

Let me know how that goes! I'm on Vista32, and everything's working at this
particular moment (glancing at the cpu to make sure it didn't hear me say
that, or it'll quit- don't want to jinx it!).

....except for the keyboard, of course... grumble... had to take that off and
put on a generic one. but that's a whole different issue.

What you got the G15 keyboard? I have that as well. makes it more exciting.

So far, the performance is a tad better under Vista32. about 5 fps faster
under Doom3, not much change under 3dmark06 , FEAR is giving me the best
numbers ever, only 2 behind XP's.

I've rebooted a few times and no crashes like I got under 7.3. So at this
moment, the 7.4 under Vista32 appear to be fine. Sure wish stalker had a
benchmark to run.

Yep, the G15... sure makes a nice paperweight :D They told me they're
hoping to have drivers ready for it by the end of April...

Ok, guess it's time to update video drivers... again... eek....

am running them on vista 64 and performance is improved.

Are you not running them for a reason, like the performance problem in FEAR
?

I initially used the XP drivers and they worked fine, and used the XP64
drivers for Vista 64. It gives an error about the media center, but that's
it.

But they have Vista drivers out (though I think it's just the XP drivers
renamed).

Now if you play FEAR alot, then it might be a long wait

I was getting a BSOD every time I restarted the computer, and after many
days of fighting with adding and removing things, I found that if I
uninstalled the keyboard, slapped on an old one, and restarted, it worked
fine (most of the time, still get the occasional evil blue, no idea why), so
I figure it's got to be the keyboard clashing with something. The error says
the video card was put into an endless loop waiting on some piece of
hardware. In other words, I really have no idea what the problem is. LOL

Anyway, the new ATI drivers went in perfectly, and no hangups on restart. I
like Vista, today :D

I wonder if you have a bad keyboard ? I've had my for a couple of months and
I've never seen that error before. So far, other than the major performance
issues it causes in the game FEAR. The G15 has worked great under Vista32
and Vista64.

I'm assuming you checked the obvious stuff like changing your system's BIOS
around for legecy and non legacy USB support and maybe turning off stuff
like Boot from USB device. Again, I don't think any of that matters. It
sounds like a flaky keyboard to me

I have to admit benchmarks were the last thing on my mind with all the BSODs
7.3 generated.

My system performance numbers sure went up - 3.0 to 4.5, all on Gaming
graphics! Big jump for just a driver update, and no BSOD so far!

Notes mention improvments in OpenGL, Quake 4 does seems to be running alot
better, the sun glare seems to have been fixed in Silent Hunter 4 but than
might be the 1.2 patch. The annoying pause in the mouse cursor when i log
on is gone.

You know, I never even thought to check. Just run it now and gaming graphics
dropped from 5.9 to 5.8. But then I'm running an ATI X1800XT and that's
what... 2 generations old now just considering the ATI product line, let
alone actual shipping DX10 parts like the nvidia stuff. So I'm not sure how
seriously to take either my old or my new score, I mean to say.

I honestly can't even tell anymore what's a new one or not, their numbers
are all whacked. I just figured out how much I could afford and went for the
best one I could squeeze in for the price LOL. Where does the x1600 fall
into that lineup?

Ok, well, <grumbling more> THAT was it, apparently... I took it back to
Circuit City and exchanged it, and the new one boots up just fine. Figures
LOL.
Thanks!

At least it's not a paperwieght anymore. I know that's gotta drive a person
nuts, spend all the time thinking the KB and Vista didn't like each other
and it was just a bad KB.
Party on dude
