I have a athlon system that i used to run on a xp1800.
I decided to buy a a xp 2600 266 chip that should work
fine on my motherboard. I didn't change any settings,
and replaced the chip, the board picked up the change and
set everything correctly, but now xp is real buggy. When
i run videos my computer will sometiems lock up.
Sometimes when i am just doing random thing i get the
dreaded blue screen with errors like:
page fault in non paged area
irql not less or equal
irql not dispatch level
bad pool caller.
people have given suggestions like bad power supply, too
aggressive ram settings, and to reset my bios and dma. I
have checked all of this. The bios is good, the power
supply is 350W. I can't figure this out. Any ideas? Is
this a problem with the chip? Also at first when i
installed it, my system wouldn't fully boot unless it was
on its side. So i took the chip out and put it back, and
no longer have an issue with that. It doesn't run too
hot, ~44C. Any help would be great.

First, get the newest Hyperion drivers and install those. Then you
probably should do a repair install of XP since the CPU has changed.

Q

You will need to do a repair install. Follow these steps:

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you will probably need re-download all updates, starting with SP1. You can
go to the Windows site and download

the XP Rollup 1 package, which will make the reinstalling of the updates
much easier and quicker.

The repair installation should leave all your data and settings intact, but
you may want to backup critical data.
