That is the virus removal tool which was released today via WindowsUpdate
and AutoUpdate, and which will be updated regularly on second Tuesdays along
with critical security patches, though.
At the moment, it will only be automatic for XP users. Windows 2000 user
will need to seek out the download:
It is even available as automatic update but keep in mind
that it will automatically delete itself after the scan
is complete if downloaded as an automatic update. If you
go to the Microsoft Download Center then you can download
it and keep running it as much as you want. Do obtain an
updated version as they come around. It only scans for a
most frequent viruses. It is not a protective tool as
other antivirus programs are such as Norton/Mcafee. It
is just a manual scanner. It is still required to use a
third party scanner but if the third party scanner fails
to load due to virus or spyware then this scanner may
help remedy that.
