Trying to set up a limited account for a young user. Whenever I open a new
account its desktop shows icons for the following programs which appear to
open to setup/install these programs. I cannot overlook this as they are
programs I currently use and have data in and do not want them on his
account or overwritten.
Quicken
Mirc
Logetek quiuckcam
Skype

The message I get using right click delete, drag to recycle, or desktop
cleanup is:
"Cannot delete Quicken ect. Access is denied
Make sure disk is not write protected and that program is not in use."

On C drive and not open anywhere. SO how do I open a new limited account
without it installing these shortcuts or how do I delete them?

Aha! Not to worry. Stick with me for a couple of minutes:

As you know, Windows XP operates on the basis of user accounts. There
are several accounts which Windows uses for itself. These aren't really
'user accounts' inasmuch as nobody (except for Windows) uses them, but
they affect the user accounts that you want to setup.

One of these system accounts is called All Users. The purpose of the All
Users account is to specify certain items that will be included with all
new user accounts. Can you see where this is going?

Most software installers automatically make the software available to
all users, and in so doing they place icons in the All Users Start menu.
Another reason to select a 'Custom' install rather than a 'Typical'
install when given the choice.

Okay, I'm starting to ramble now. Go to C:\Documents and Settings and
look for the young user's account. Open their Start menu folder and
simply remove the shortcuts you don't want to be there. (You have to do
this from an Administrator account.)
 
Thank you JS that did it. Note that you must restart xp for change to take
effect "or at least I had to"

I had already done as you suggested. Surprisingly the shortcuts did not
exist in all user nor youngster and did not even show from his
desktop/start/all programs.
Problem fixed by making him administrator as suggested by JS. My thanks to
you both.

If the shortcuts weren't in All Users, and junior doesn't have the
permissions necessary to install software, then how do you suppose those
shortcuts got there in the first place? I think there's more to the story.
 
Good Question but I have no answer. I checked those locations after abouit
the third bad install of new user. Account never got past me.
NOTE:
The icons called up install programs for quicken mirc ect not the actual
programs.
All is now well.
