Hi,
I am about install a new Maxtor 160GB drive on to my A7N8X-E WIN2K (SP4) system. They
include a CD-ROM to be used. I don't think I need it for this system.
Is that right or wrong?
Warm Regards,
Lou

Most probably you won't need that CD ROM; I have about 6 or 8 of them lying
around. Basically, there are some utilities on the CD, but in my own
experience they don't really do what I want to do with the disk. If your
intention is to use the new HD for additional storage, just install it, go
into Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Disk Management, then follow the
program of assigning a "disk signature" (whatever the hell that is) to the
disk, then partition it (if you wish), or make one big partition, then
format then use it.
If on the other hand your goal is to use this new big drive instead of the
one that is there, then it is more complicated. Probably the easiest way to
do that is to do everything I already listed, then to use a program like
Norton Ghost or Drive Image to clone the original drive onto the new one,
then change jumpers, make the new drive the master, fiddle with the bios so
that it knows to boot from the new drive, do whatever you plan to do with
the old drive, and there you have it. There may be a utility for cloning
the original drive on that CD; I have no experience with it and from what
I've read I'd probably not trust it.
Good luck,
