Brain-strainer. Installed latest updates for XP including new AMD and ATI Radeon drivers. Fixed visual probs in NWN. Got new sound drivers from HP for my SB Live! Value card. Found spyware, installed Spybot-S&D, removed spyware. Recommended program, by the way. It works. Patched NWN after installing HOTU expansion. Norton AV killed Trojan.StartPage and I had a discussion w/my daughter. NWN crashed and locked up my computer. Rebooted. Checked tsr's, found msmsgs.exe loaded w/o Windows Messenger being loaded and no active connection. MSN Messenger not installed. Closed msmsgs.exe. It reloaded. Closed it again. It reloaded. Keeps happening. Reset msmsgs.exe priority to "low". Closed it. It reloaded. No viruses onboard including Sasser. Win Messenger not loaded or being queued by any programs I'm aware of. AMD Athlon XP2200+, Presario 6000, Radeon 9000/64 mb, SB Live! Value, 768mb RAM, XP Home, oodles of HD space. Don't ask what an oodle is, never seen one. :-) Prior to all of the above, NWN never crashed but there were visual display problems, i. e. tilesets light/dark, gamma had a mind of its own. Sound worked fine.

Add-on: Tired, sleepy, going offline. Please e-mail anything useful. Thanks & a tip o' the gunsight to whoever helps.

Not sure I understand the problem, but it sounds like you're confusing "MSN
Messenger" with "Messenger".

Try this: Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services | and then
scroll down to "Messenger".
Right click & select Properties, (Stop it if running) and then change
Startup Type to Disabled. OK your way out...

Hope this helps!

No, MSMSGS (which is what he listed) is the MSN Messenger program executable
file, though there may be issues with both coming up.

Fire up MSN Messenger, go to the General tab, and uncheck everything. That
should keep it from coming up.
There is (was?) also a Windows Messenger, as well as the Messenger service.
If the latter comes up, enable your firewall (or download a firewall such as
Zonealarm) and/or disable the Messenger service. (If the messages that come
up don't come in the form of a chat window, but just a box with information
and an OK or Close button, it's the messenger service.)

Comes down to sloppy code writers @ MS, you'll find it's
loading thanks to iFramework 1.1 unloading MSN Messenger
won't make it go away. it's also annoying the F'K outa
me.. and I've gone back to a clean new install but alas
as soon as I Update XP it's back.... as I said sloppy
code writers
