Neverending download of emails from past

All of a sudden windows mail is downloading thousands of past emails from
months ago. Can stop it manually but cannot retrieve current emails because
it always begins from back in December 2009? Have checked with tech with no
luck. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance
 
Is this a POP3 account?

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced - Uncheck: Leave a copy of
messages on the server.

Now close WinMail and log on to your mail server's Webmail site and delete
the old messages from there.
 
Who is the mail provider (the part of your email address after the @
symbol)?
You can log in via webmail and move all the older messages to a new
folder. Windows Mail can only download what is in the Inbox folder of
webmail.
