never hangs up

Once connected the modem connection never hangs and stays
connected. I have to manually disconnect by right-clicking
on the bottom-right connection icon. Adjusting the "Idle
time before hanging up" setting in the Network
Connections - Dial-up menues will do nothing. When the
computer was new this setting worked, but hasn't for at
least 6 months. How can I reset or correct the problem.
I am running Windows XP. I have a Dell Dimension 4500
computer about 1-year old.

this may be the effect of spyware. they keep "phoning home" so the
connection is never technically idle.
