Hi there,

My Win98SE machine is acting strange in that I can never seem to
successfully browse to www.Microsoft.com whether or not I type in the address
or use the 'Update Windows' option from the Start menu.

I have sanity checked going to lots of other web site by randomly selecting,
google, dell, cnbc, etc.....and only on microsoft does it revolve endlessly
but never connect.

I will confess that last week I deleted tons of files from the c: that I
thought were not needed and screwed up the boot process......and had to fix
that by re-loading some crucial dlls onto the c: (why they are not in
folders I don't know - but then I am not that technical)

It is an HP pavillion for home use and has had tons of games and kids
browsing....I had Webroot & antivirus so I didn't think this was a malicious
code thing but frankly am baffled. Anyone have any thoughts on this??

Hi,
Some things to try/look at...
1. Disable third-party security programs, as a test. One of them may be
causing this.
2. Check for a HOSTS file at C:\WINDOWS\hosts. Open the hosts file with
Notepad. If there are microsoft.com entries in the hosts file, you can edit
them out then File> Save.
3. Clear the Temporary Internet Files from Internet Options> General. Clear
the History. Delete any cookies from Microsoft, MSN or Passport.
4. With 98SE, you may have a repair option for IE. Go to Add/remove
programs> IE> add/remove> repair.

Hope this helps,
Don
