My knowledge of wireless networks is poor (I`m learning).

Basically, I have an Intel 5000 Pro wireless Access Point 802.11a attached
to the 3-Com Ethernet connector of my A7N8X-Deluxe via an Ethernet cable.

I want to be able to link into my main computer (the one with the Access
Point and internet attached) from 2 other computers in my household (a
laptop with a CardBus card & computer with a wireless PCI card).

I want to be able to use the internet (dial-up only) connection on my main
machine from my laptop & 2nd computer as well as share files etc

Have I got this setup correctly (OR should I be using a router ?) - not
exactly sure difference between a router & Access point

Rollo Fan,

Big thanks for the help, I understand what you are saying.

My MAJOR problem is that I can`t access the browser interface to get into my
Access Point (I`ve restarted/reset the unit but really can`t get into it
whatever I do).

When I get into it, I`m certain I can sort the problem - I have had it
working but only once (I wasthe time when I managed to get into the Access
point`s interface)

A router is not necessary in your case. First share your internet
connection, it will act as the router. Enable Internet Connection
Sharing. This will also enable a DHCP server on you network.

Secondly, connect your PC to the Access Point (you already did) and
make sure you used the right cable (straight vs crossed) as the AP
might expect a hub or switch on the other end of the cable. There
might be a selector on the AP. I assume there should be a light
indicating the Ethernet.

Configure your WLAN network (channel, networkname, WEP key ...) on the
AP and both wireless computers. Use DHCP on both wireless computers.

Your wireless computers should receive an IP address from your wired
desktop computer and you have basic network connectivity. Depending
what you want to do you have to:
- configure Internet Connection Sharing
- change workgroup names
- share drives/printers
.....

Hope this helps

You might like to check here:
http://www.intel.com/support/network/wireless/pro5000/accesspoint/sb/cs-000218-prd881.htm

If it gets it's address from DHCP you'll need to set that up on your
machine. I'd recommend leaving it at default IP address of 192.168.2.1/16
as it's a pretty sensible address.

You could always reset to factory settings (can that be done without the
browser interface?)
