im getting my ibook tommorow hopefully and i want to be able to do the whole wireless internet thing

i'm going to get a netgear DG834G (it seems to be good, anyone heard different?) but is there anything else ? i've already got a patch cable and microfilters so i think im all set

i'm assuming the phone line that goes into my USB modem will work with the router ?

my plan is to plug it straight into my PC's ethernet port as its the main internet PC (plus its about 8 inches from the phone socket so i think i can live with the wire) and to use the wireless for the laptop

I set up a Netgear DG834G for a mate with AOHell with no problems - if it can be done with AOHell, then it can be done with anyone

Just follow the instructions with the netgear and you can't really go wrong - one setting I had to change from default with AOL was the MTU setting to 1400 - dunno whether you will need to with your ISP though.

Any problems, just give me a shout :thumb:

its good to know someone here has set one up, i'll probably give it a bash at the weekend

No problem - gonna be away at the weekend though, how about giving it a go over the next couple of days - it don't take long ;)

I would completely remove all traces of the old ISP modem software first as well, if you need to go back to it you can always put it back on :thumb:

Out of interest - who is your ISP?

im on plusnet and setting up their connection was a doddle as you download this app that does it all for you with all of your details in it :D, i still need to get the router thingy ordered or find somewhere that sells it reasonably cheap near by so it'll probably be a couple of days and im in no rush

Ah, my step-mums on Plusnet, I helped her put it back on the other week after a clean install of XP - although I manually inputted the settings as I hate putting ISP software anywhere near a PC.

In which case you have an account page on their site which gives you all the settings needed - it would be a good idea to make a copy of it before you start ;)

i think you've misunderstood me, its just a network configuration file nothing like the crap that AOL try and force on you
