It cant be that difficult can it?!!!

OK, simple enough, have to fairly high spec laptops, one running windows xp home, the other xp professional. Have a cat 6 network cable, crossover. Want to play games. Plug the cables in and NOTHING. Try running network stuff from control panel (albeit we dont know what to do!!). How do you go about it? Surely its not that hard!! What happened to plug and play?!!! Plug and prey more like it!!

A crossover is fine for copying a few files ... and that be about it. Turn off the firewalls.

Yes, it is really simple ... with the right kit. ;)

Get a bloody Router ... oh, and XP Home can/may/if you're lucky/if it feels like it, talk to XP Pro ... MS is amazing.

:D

Well, if u crack it Bodhi, do let me know. I have desktop on Home Edition and lappy on Professional and I cannot get a network to be fully operational despite many hours of trying. On the face of it - it should work - but it doesn't!!!!

Love

Gabs xx

Once the firewalls are off, try networking it manually. Im in work but from what i can remember its something like - Goto networking in the control pannel, right click, properties, one of the tabs will have a few options like ip address, subnet mask etc.. choose an ip like 10.0.0.1 for one pc and 10.0.0.2 for the other. CHoose something like 255.255.0.0 for the subnet. sometimes xp has a problem sharing the internet and games through the same subnet i have found. Now hopefully you can share the internet, files and game till your hearts content.
