At one time I had my wife's computer's ethernet card connect to an ethernet
card in my computer and then I had a second ethernet card in my computer
connecter to my cable modem. Since I only have one IP address with my ISP I
ran Sygate to allow my wife's computer to access the internet thru my
computer. The only disadvantage was that both computers had to be on. When
I got a new Motorola surfboard cable modem box (SB4100) found it has
independent ethernet and USB connections so I connect my wife's computer to
the ethernet port on the modem and I connect via USB. No longer need the
Sygate software but did have to buy a second IP address from my ISP for
$5/month. Computers can now connect independently of each other and work
great.
