I have set up a p2p network, currently my xp machine acts
as the internet gateway (using a adsl connection), the
problem I have is that although my network works with
regards to file & printer sharing I cannot get my Windows
ME machine to access the Internet. I Believe this is due
to a lack of routing software, I have tried winroute
lite, which caused my XP machine to crash, I could either:
1) Build a new machine and install Windows XP
2) Buy an ADSL Router
3) Change the OS on my XP machine to Win 2000, which I
have been informed runs win route.
4) Obtain some routing software which will run on XP
Does anyone have any suggestions.

Hi

Have you tried ICS, it comes free with XP. Have a look at
www.practicallynetworked.com in the Internet Sharing section or
www.homenethelp.com - they both have tutorials on setting up internet
connection sharing.

Sorry Bill, should have been a bit more specific, my me
machine can share the broadband connection (I proved this
by checking the icon in the ME sys tray, which showed
that the connection was being shared) the problem is that
when you open IE or O.Express it cannot make the
connection to retrieve the necessary information. I
believe this is because that although the me machine
shares the connection it is not carrying out NAT (Network
Address Translation) which a router would do for you so
although the me machine is connecting to the net, because
of the lack of routing software, the information is not
coming back.

Hi

The same thing applies, use ICS on the ME machine - ICS *is* NAT routing
software. Perhaps I'm a bit confused (that's nothing new) or just don't
understand what you're saying, do you have ICS installed on the ME PC? Do
you also have a firewall on the ICS PC? If you do that can cause the
clients not to get access to the internet.
