Ok I am completely lost.

I have two computers (98 & XP) one adsl. How and what do
I need to get them talking with one another. Do I need
more hardware. The adsl has the capability for two
computers - but do I need a router? I have already set up
both computers and can connect if I unhook and hook in
with either computer.

If anyone can tell me what I need - I have read that it
can be done with just an adaptor on the old machine?

Check with your ISP. You probably have only signed up
for one dynamic IP address. You can probably pay a
monthly fee to get a second or you can by a router with
NAT that can server many computers from one dynamic IP
address. Personally I use the Linksys BEFSR41.
