i have an existing small network (which connecting via a
5-port hub). now i link my PC with a broadband router.
once the link to the broadband is up, my existing network
is not accessible anymore. i have a separate network card
for each connection

Quite possibly, the broadband router is using the same IP scheme as the the
rest of your network.
From a command prompt, do "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and see if both
the network cards are on the same logical subnet. If they are, change the
IP scheme on your local network.
