I'm trying to network two computers through my DSL
router. I've used the wizard on both computers, without
any error coming up and rebooted NOTHING! they don't see
themselves or each other?!?! My connections are through a
Linksys router. What am I doing wrong? HELP

The Wizard calls a DSL router a "residential gateway". Choose that
option when it asks how the computers connect to the Internet.

What make and model of DSL router do you have?

You're welcome, Ron. Yes, that should do it. Please give it a try
and let the news group know the result.

I am also using the Linksys BEFSR41 router and trying to
make my network work. The router is connected to a cable
modem. I have a desk top using xp pro and a laptop using
xp home. I have tried several times using
the "residentual gateway" and it is not working. I can
use both computers to access the Internet, but we can not
see each other. When I go to "My Network Places" on the
desktop, I have a blank screen (no folders and no
printer). When I do the same on the laptop, I get te
local "shared folder" but do not see the "shared
printer." Either way, neither computer shows the other
computer as being part of the local network. Any ideas on
where to go from here?

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Steve,

I have a similar setup, using the Linksys WRT54G router. I found I had to
disable WAN blocking on the router in order to get my Win98 Laptop (using a
wireless WPC54G card) and my XP Desktop (connected to the router the
old-fashioned way) PCs to talk to each other. I have firewall software
(ZoneAlarm) on each PC to block external WAN (and other) intrusions, and the
firewall software also has to be configured to include the IP addresses of
the Laptop and Desktop PCs respectively as "trusted." Do you see any
problems with my solution as it stands.
