networking XP pro and Mac for LAN play

Hi. I've been able to network a couple of Macs together on a LAN to play
UT2k4. I want to be able to network a PC using XP Pro and a Mac using OS X
together.

How can I do this? I've hooked them up both via ethernet cable and to an
ethernet hub. But I can't get them to "see" EACH OTHER. On the Mac side, it
should be fairly easy, but I can't figure it out on my PC. I go into Network
settings and from there I'm lost.

I already know how to configure the game to start a multiplayer game and
have the other one join; it's just getting them to see each other first is
the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Well since you are using a "hub" then you need to give the computer an IP
address (if its really a home router then is should do it automaticly) After
all that good stuff is set up I would imagine that you should be able to
fire the game up and connect VIA direct connect. Where you would go in and
put the ip address in of the computer that is hosting. If that doesn't work
then I'm lost. I would tend to assume that MAC's use the TCP/IP to connect
to networks so that should be enough to make it work.

your IP address (and it has pretty pictures :))

Are you sure you can actually do this? It's very rare for cross-platform
games to actually work together.

If it's not connected to the internet at all, and it's just the hub between
them, manually set their IP addresses, don't ask me how to do this on Mac OS
(you seem to know how) but for Windows, right click on the LAN icon in
Network Connections and go to Properties.

If you go double click on Internet Protocol.

Set the IP for example as 192.168.1.1,
subnet mask 255.255.255.0,
gateway enter anything or don't enter anything if it is just a LAN with no
outside connection. Same with the DNS servers.

Then set up on the Mac
IP 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

It's critical that they don't just have any IP address assigned to them,
they've got to be in specific ranges etc, so just use the above.

Once you've done that verify that traffic is flowing between them (turn off
any firewalls), you can do this by typing 'cmd' in the Run box on the Start
menu. Type in ping 192.168.1.2 and hitting enter that will send 4 test
packets to the Mac, if they all return that means the basic network is up
and running and the games, if they do support cross-platform play should
work fine.

If none of them return then there's a basic networking problem somewhere.
