Networking XP Home with NT 4

I would like to network two home PCs together to allow bi
directional file sharing etc.

PC 1 is a new desktop running XP Home with serial, USB and
firewire ports

PC 2 is a laptop running NT 4 workstation SP6 with a
serial port and a Xircom RealPort Ethernet 10/100 card

PC 1 is the master with internet and printer connections,
and I would like PC 2 to be able to access these via the
network.

What would be the easiest way to network the PCs together,
preferably without upgrading NT to XP? Is it just a case
of adding an Ethernet card to PC 1 or is there more I need
to know!

The minimal hardware solution is to add a 2nd NIC to PC1 and
connect the NICs of the two PCs with a crossover cable. That
