Steve

I cannot get an XP Home Edition and a 98 computer to see
each other in Network Neighborhood nor map a drive to
either. They cannot even ping each but they can ping the
gateway, the print server and get onto the Internet. They
both have all the current updates and no viruses after a
full scan with the 9/20/03 definitions. I have this
connection problem with a Netgear router and a Linksys
router. They both can print to the print servers included
on both routers. Both have File and Print Sharing turned
on. Both have NetBIOS over TCP/IP turned on. The
Internet Connection Firewall is turned off the XP machine.
I do not have a network bridge created. I have a shared
folder located on both. I have only one protocol, TCP/IP,
running on both. The IPs are assigned with DHCP which all
settings are verified with ipconfig /all. I would
appreciate any help, I cannot think of anything else and
have not found anything but what I listed here. Thank you.

You've covered almost all the bases already, Steve.

Since the computers can't even ping each other, I suspect that
firewalls are causing the problem. Have you installed any: ZoneAlarm,
Norton, McAfee, Sygate, Tiny, BlackICE, etc? If so, have you
configured them to allow access by other computers on the LAN? Even
if you have, it might help to un-install the firewall and try again.

I've also heard of some antivirus programs interfering with network
access. Try temporarily disabling them.

This must be impossible. Thanks Steve W. but after looking
at multiple posts here and trying their suggestions and
working on it off and on for several weeks and today for
several hours I've come to the conclusion that networking
98 and XP is impossible. I have gotten all the machines
to appear in Network Neighborhood but I still cannot open
(browse) the 98 or XP machines. I did add a 2000 machine
and it networks fine between 98 or XP. There are many
other things I don't like about XP so I'll just trash XP.
Another fine product from Microsoft.

I'm sorry that you're having such problems, Steve. Have you
considered having a local networking person come over and look at your
network? It can be hard to diagnose problems remotely through a news
group, telephone support call etc.

I've set up lots of networks with XP and 98, so I assure you that it's
possible.

Have you ever installed a firewall program on any of the computers?
If you have, and even if you've un-installed the firewall, it could
still be causing problems. In that case:

1. Re-install the firewall program.
2. Un-install it using the procedure provided by the manufacturer.
3. Reboot.
4. Go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of
the firewall.
5. Reboot.
