Windows XP / AMD Duron 1.3
Windows 98 / AMD K6 550

I had these two networked just fine, using a 4 port
router just fine, but when I added a internet connection,
the network will not funciton.

The Windows XP machine has a built in network card and
currently the internet connection (cable modem) feeds
directly into that one. I also added an additional
network card so that the internet connection and network
would have no confusion. My XP machine can see both
computer in the workgroup, however it cannot access the
Windows 98 machine.

The Windows 98 machine can find itself, but cannot see
the XP machine. All of the hardware seems to be working
properly, and I've told it to obtain specific IP
addresses, but that doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions?

Win9x can't see Win2000/XP

By default, Win2000/XP disables NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) for selected
clients. In a peer-to-peer network without WINS, Win9x will be unable to
browse, locate, or create file and print share connections to a Windows 2000
computer with NetBIOS disabled. So, you must setup the Win2000/XP to uses
NetBIOS over TCP/IP to communicate with prior versions of Windows NT and
other clients, such as Microsoft Windows 95. Alternatively, you may want to
add NetBEUI on all workstations in the peer-to-peer network.
