I have hooked my win xp desktop and my win 2000 laptop to
a hub with the internet being shared through it. The
laptop is working but the desktop will not reach the
internet. Neither computer sees the other. The xp machine
gives me the error "cannot renew ip address". Any
suggestions as to what is causing this or how to fix it?

Thanks

Are you using a DSL or cable connection to the internet? I assume so from
the description that you posted here. Most of the DSL and CABLE modems will
only allow one connection at a time. You cannot use a "hub" to make a group
connection. One machine must "release" the connection before the other can
use it. If you want to do it right, go get yourself a router (pretty cheap)
and connect your two computers to it. It will maintain the connection and
"route" the requests to the internet from both computers as the requests are
made. A good place to get information on using this type of connection is
at http://www.broadbandreports.com . There are a lot of networking
"experts" in their forum that have posted step-by-step instructions that
will work for most of the internet service providers that are out there.
