I'm having a problem getting my XP machines to see my
2000 machine and vice-versa. I've got them set up in a
workgroup because I don't have a domain/network server.
I just want to be able to share files between the two
platforms. Do I need to add NetBios and NetBuei to my XP
machines? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't install NetBEUI -- nothing in Windows networking requires it.

XP and 2000 can network without NetBIOS, using "Direct Hosting of SMB
Over TCP/IP". However, it's hard to set up without a domain/network
server, and earlier versions of Windows can't do it. Go ahead and
enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

If you connect the computers to a broadband router for Internet
access, configure them to obtain an IP address automatically. If not,
it's better to assign them static IP addresses, e.g. 192.168.0.1 and
192.168.0.2, with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP. The Wizard won't run on 2000.
Right click and share the desired disks and folders. Access the other
computer in My Network Places.

Make sure that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on the
local area network connection.
