Hello,
I've ran networks for years with various vertions of
Windows, but for some reason I can't seem to get one to
work with XP. What I am currently trying to do is connect
my notebook computer and my desktop computer through a
router. They are both running WinXP. I can access my
high speed internet connection with both computers, but no
matter what I do, I can't get them to see eachother. If
anyone has any suggestions, please E-mail me at
(e-mail address removed)

Thank You
Mike

I am having the same problem, with my new xp machine, it
cannot see any other pc on the network. I too work with
networks for a number of years. If you get a solution
please forward to me at (e-mail address removed), cheers.
It's quite frustrating at this stage. Please help,
thanks.

Turn off XP's built-in firewall.

Some things to look for when attempting to do this...

1. Check the IP address of each machine, are you on the same subnet?
2. Are both machines in the same workgroup?
3. Can the 2 machines talk to each other via IP address (i..e. can you ping
back and forth between the machines)

As for the original question, since both machines can use your Internet
connection, that indicates they are on the same subnet, meaning that your
router is acting as a NAT and handing out 192.x.x.x addresses to each of the
machines behind it.

Now, if that is the case, when you say the machines cannot "see" each other,
are you referring to file shares? How are you attempting to "see" the other
system?

Thanks,

I had the same problem... It appears that it is a
firewall problem. Of course if you turn off the built in
firewall, what good is a firewall. So, my problem was
the Zone Alarm freebie. (If you don't have zone alarm it
could be another firewall program. Had to upgrade to
Zone Alarm Pro and learn to use it. There are some
tricks to it though and Zone Alarm helps do not help.
