networking with macs

I have winxp and a mac OSX networked with crossover cable (network card to
network card) and have the mac acessing the PC files no problem but when I
try to connect to the mac (I have tried from "map network dive, add network
place, search for computers) I always find the mac but a dialog box comes
asking for a user name (in form DOMAIN\username) and password. I don't have a
password at all so I enter my user name and domain and click ok but the box
keeps appearing with no more info. I have connected to other PC's before with
no problems but the Mac is being annoying

No, the Mac is assuming your network is set up properly and has good
security in place. Make a password on the XP box for your user account.
If you want to automate the login process, use TweakUI to set it up.

Now make a user account and password on the Mac identical to the one on
the Windows box. Then when you ask for files from the Mac, it will be
as an authenticated local user on the machine and you'll be allowed
access.
